An accumulation of thoughts about a few different topics.

The government has given us another WTF acronym. Now it stands for "Win The Future" as well as "Wikileaks Task Force".

The lame duck Congress approved the new START treaty with Russia. It is now binding upon the USA. Already the Russian government is hedging on their part of it. Exactly what some of the critics said would happen! (Some other complaints about the treaty included that there were insufficient verification procedures for checking the Russian compliance; there was unilateral disarmament on the American side, and that America's missile capability would be severely diminished.) Add to this, the knowledge that Russia has sent 1,800 anti-aircraft missiles to Venezuela and, during Chavez's October visit to Tehran, he signed an agreement that allows Iran to establish a military base in Venezuela, and gives Iran permission to use the Shahab 3 missiles in case of an "emergency." Shahab 3 missiles have the capability of carrying biological and chemical weapons in their warheads. Chavez also gave Iran the green light to deploy Scud-B and Scud-C missiles from their new military base. In return for Chavez's generosity, Iran has promised to serve as weapons of mass destruction tutors to Venezuela and train their military personnel.

How amazing is nature! We know so little and think we are so smart. Did you know there is a bacteria that eats iron? The bacteria, which has been named Halmonas Titanicae, has been consuming the iron on board the Titanic since it split in two and sank two and a half miles down in the ocean. Experts have been examining the bacteria found on the wreck since samples were first brought up in 1991. They estimate that the Titanic will have vanished by 2030 – its iron, all 50,000 tons of it, will be eaten by then!

America has a significant problem with illegal immigration, so WHY are we sending border agents to Afghanistan!!!!! Janet Napolitano announced that Department of Homeland Security agents are being sent to secure the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan. January 1st she confirmed there were 25 Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CPB) agents in Afghanistan, and that number could increase to 65 or more by the end of this year.

Our Founding Fathers understood human nature and knew the history of previous republics. They used their knowledge of these (and many other things) in writing the Constitution. A revolutionary and brilliant attempt to give the United States a republic form of government constructed in such a way that it might last – unlike all previous republics. Remember Ben Franklin's words at the end of the Constitutional Convention. When asked what form of government had they given us, he replied, "A republic, Madam, if you can keep it." Thomas Jefferson wrote, "It is a hard, undeniable truth that the federal government cannot give to anybody what it does not first take from somebody else, and the power to do so is ruinous." " A government big enough to give you all you want is big enough to take all you have." And that we must "prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people, under the pretense of taking care of them."

"Comparing the words of the Constitution to the actions of our leaders in recent years will surely make clear the enduring wisdom of James Madison's warning that 'there are more instances of the abridgment of freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments by those in power than by violent and sudden usurpations.' Talking seriously about this condition is the first step to remedying it, just as Madison and the rest of the Founders intended." --The Washington Examiner

The other week a Washington Post blogger, Ezra Klein, wrote that reading the Constitution in Congress was a "gimmick" and "I mean, you can say two things about it. One is that it has no binding power on anything. And two, the issue of the Constitution is not that people don't read the text and think they're following. The issue of the Constitution is that the text is confusing because it was written more than 100 years ago and what people believe it says differs from person to person and differs depending on what they want to get done." It seems to me that this 26 year old blogger is painfully ignorant. 1. The Constitution is binding. It is the supreme law of the land and this country's judicial system is based on the rule of law. 2. It is perfectly clear, and if there is any question about the meaning, it can be clarified with the other writings of the Founding Fathers. The "confusion" comes from people deliberately trying to misconstrue the meaning for their own purposes and activist judges who believe in creating law from the bench (the job of legislatures) rather than ruling from the law - which is their actual job. If Mr. Klein thinks it is not understandable because it is 'more than 100 years old', think how unintelligible he would consider it if he knew it was 223 years old this past September!

Let the Founders speak for themselves:

"Every word of the Constitution decides a question between tyranny and liberty." - James Madison

"The Constitution is not an instrument for the government to restrain the people; it is an instrument for the people to restrain the government—lest it come to dominate our lives and interests."- Patrick Henry

"In questions of power, then, let no more be heard of confidence in man, but bind him down from mischief by the chains of the Constitution."- Thomas Jefferson
