 Read Across America March 1

Our Town and the Dunbar Free Library team up to host a Dr. Seuss Birthday Party beginning at 6 p.m. Friday, March 1 at the Grantham Town Hall. This Read Across America event begins with an animated reading. Children will make a hat like the Cat’s, receive a free book and bookmark, and of course there will be birthday cake! This is a free event to encourage children (and parents) to read. 

 

Jason Cann at Bistro

Bistro Nouveau presents Jason Cann from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, March 1 in the Tavern at The Center at Eastman. No cover, but reservations are recommended, 863-8000.

 

Golf open house March 2

Get ready for golf season at Eastman Golf Links Open House from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 2 at The Center at Eastman. Get a look at just-released Taylor Made Golf and Adams Golf equipment, get some instructional pointers from Golf Pro Mark Larrabee, get information on 2013 membership options and learn about the 2013 leagues and groups, and much more. There will be raffles and door prizes, too. Free to everyone.

 

Community dinner and lunch planned for March

The following community-wide events will be held in the downstairs of the Grantham United Methodist Church. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Saturday, March 2, 6 p.m. Potluck Dinner. Bring a dish to share.
Tuesday, March 12, Noon Community Lunch. $2 donation suggested.

 

Annual School Meeting March 5; Town Meeting March 12

The annual school meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 5 in the school gym (bad weather date: Thursday, March 7). While you’re at the school, take a minute to stop and see the Take Flight! project recently completed in the cafeteria (information below).

Election of Town and School Officers will be 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 12.

Town Meeting will begin at 5 p.m. Tuesday, March 12 at the Town Hall. The Town Clerk’s Office will close at 4 p.m.; there will be no evening hours.

 

GVS’ Take Flight! project is complete

The "Take Flight!" artist-in-resident project at Grantham Village School is ready for viewing. Everyone is welcome stop in and take a look. The three-dimensional project, done with the help of artist Annie Ballin and under the supervision of art teacher Betty Larrabee, is based on birds and involved all grade levels.

The project is sponsored by the Grantham Teacher Parent Group, which raises money throughout the year to support GVS staff, students and families. The GTPG hosts a popular, family-friendly, annual BINGO night, supports the Books and Beyond program to encourage student reading outside of the classroom and offers grants to teachers for the classroom materials.

Grantham Cadette Troop #22368 will be selling Girl Scout cookies prior to the Annual School District Meeting on Tuesday, March 5. Girl Scout cookies are $4 per box. We’ll have Thin Mints, Samoas, Tagalongs, Do-Si-Dos, Trefoils, Dulce de Leche, Savannah Smiles, and Thank U Berry Munch. Please support our Girl Scouts!

 

Food collection continues at town hall

Even though the food bank in Grantham has closed, food can be dropped off at the Grantham Town Hall for other local food banks that serve Grantham residents.

 

BMSD meeting March 5

The Blue Mountain Snowdusters ORC will hold its next meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 5 at the Grantham Town Hall. (I am still waiting for a confirmation on this since it’s the school meeting night. I’ll let you know a.s.a.p.)

 

"Ella: The Queen of Swing" March 6

Don’t miss "The Queen of Swing," the story of Ella Fitzgerald, from homeless in Harlem to the Queen of Swing, told by Nanette Perrotte combining social history, musicology and storytelling, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 6 at The Center at Eastman. The program is free and open to the public. It is presented by the Friends of the Dunbar Library and the Eastman Community Association.

 

Spring plantings is March 8 topic

Thelma Hewitt, regional representative for the Garden Conservancy, will be the guest speaker at the Grantham Garden Club meeting being held Friday, March 8 in the lower level room at the Grantham Town Hall. The social begins at 9:30 a.m., business meeting at 10 and program at 10:30. The presentation will emphasize spring plantings, including woodland plants and wild flowers. The program is free and open to the public.

 

Bistro Brain Busters Trivia March 9

Enjoy a fun-filled night out with Kathy Pomer and her crack trivia team beginning at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 9 at The Center at Eastman. Teams of 2 to 6 are challenged through multiple rounds with the winners taking home great prizes. Reservations recommended: 863-8000. Free.

 

Kathy Kosins comes to JOSA

Jazz on a Sunday Afternoon continues its 21st year Sunday, March 10 with vocalist Kathy Kosins (www.kathykosins.com).

The program runs from 4 to 7 p.m.; doors open at 3. Tickets are $18/adult; $16/senior or student (62 and older or 17 and younger). Isle of Shoals is topic

Brenda Watts will make a presentation on the Isle of Shoals beginning at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 27 at The Center at Eastman. Brenda, a Grantham resident, has taught courses about the Shoals at both Adventures in Learning (AIL) at Colby-Sawyer College and Institute for Lifelong Education at Dartmouth (ILEAD), and has hosted five trips to Star Island. She is a member of the Isles of Shoals Historical and Research Associates. The program is free and open to the public.

 

Easter Sunday services scheduled

Easter Sunday Services will be held Sunday, March 31 in Grantham beginning at sunrise at Gray Ledges and at 9 a.m. at the Grantham United Methodist Church. Everyone is invited.

 

Kindergarten registration for 13/14 school year begins

Grantham Village School kindergarten registration for children who will be 5 years of age on or before Sept. 30, 2013 has begun. Parents and guardians should call 863-1681 before April 5 to register and schedule a screening time for a Friday in May.

Library Fundraising meeting March 7


The Fundraising Task Force for the addition to the Dunbar Free Library will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 7 at the library. In addition to a direct solicitation mailing, the group will discuss other fundraisers, including author talks, book-themed dinners, a "made in Grantham" auction, a duck race, and more. Please attend if you have any interest in helping with any of these things. Reminders

• Dunbar Free Library’s Laptime for ages up to 36 months is held at 10 a.m. Wednesdays. Storytime for ages 3-5 years is held at 10 a.m. Thursdays. Adults are required to attend with their children.

• The morning walking program continues at Grantham Village School gym from 7:30 to 8:10 a.m. each morning that school is in session (no walking Feb. 18-22) until April vacation. Participants must bring clean sneakers to wear while walking.

• Grantham United Methodist Church worship service at 9 a.m. each Sunday, with Pastor Patricia Williams. Everyone is welcome to attend.

• CG Shepherd Realty collects coats year-round to be distributed to people in need. Drop off gently used coats at Shepherd’s Grantham office in Sawyer Brook Plaza, in the coat collections can, or in one of Shepherd’s Smart Cars when you see them parked around town.

• ACBL-sanctioned duplicate bridge every Thursday at 1 p.m. at The Center at Eastman. $3/person. Everyone welcome regardless of experience. Arrive early to help set up.

Winter Parking Ordinance: No vehicle parking on any street or way or in a public parking lot within the Town of Grantham between the hours of 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. from Nov. 1 to April 1. Vehicles towed at owner’s expense and violators will be subject to a fine of $50.

Town Winter Sand: The Town of Grantham will provide sand for all residents during the winter months. Sand is available for private use only and to be collected by private individuals. There shall be NO use of the sand facility by Commercial Sanding/Plow Operators. Sand is to be taken from the designated area and residents ARE NOT ALLOWED to remove sand from the Highway Department’s sand shed. If the designated area is empty please notify the Selectmen’s Office. Violators will be subject to a $25 fine.

Street Obstruction Ordinance: No person shall deposit snow, ice or any other materials on any Class V town-maintained road or push snow or ice across the traveled surface of any Town of Grantham road. Violators will be subject to a $25 fine.
