Steven Cunningham State Representative
Sullivan District 2

June 24, 2010

Steven Cunningham represents the towns of Springfield, Croydon, Newport, Goshen and Washington in the NH House of Representatives.

Representative Cunningham is a member of the House Committee on Municipal and County Government.

The State of New Hampshire is taking a little break from passing laws. Great. Enough harm done this year. Now the Representatives turn to the County. Sullivan County will get approval of a budget next week, probably. I was surprised to see that the county takes money by force from the residents (property taxes) to give to charities.

Now charities are usually good and it is a matter of record that Americans are the most generous givers to charities in the world. Somehow, however, taxing residents to give to charities seems wrong. Like free enterprise, good and efficient charities attract supporters, inefficient and inappropriate charities wither and die. Unless the latter are spoon fed by government.

The County Commissioners make these detailed decisions on the budget and the Representatives (here called the County Delegation) approve or disapprove that budget. In these tough times for the taxpayers, I would like to see our Commissioners let the public decide which charities to support.

Next week I will look at the details, and, with the rest of the Delegation, tell the Commissioners how much they may spend, which will tell the Sullivan County residents how much in taxes they will pay.

Let me know what you think about it all. After all, I represent you.
