Steven Cunningham State Representative
Sullivan District 2

February 20, 2010

Steven Cunningham represents the towns of Springfield, Croydon, Newport, Goshen and Washington in the NH House of Representatives.

Representative Cunningham is a member of the House Committee on Municipal and County Government.

Four weeks has passed for me as a new state representative. I had done quite a bit of testifying before committees and worked for and against legislation. Being on the other side of the table is certainly enlightening, however.

One thing that amazes me, is how many people want to feed me. No kidding. Breakfast, lunch and dinner. I think I could avoid buying a meal for months. I've not been going to all these meals, though. I hit a couple. The invitation, of course, is the way that lobbying groups get to talk to representatives. The pattern seems to be, the first 20 minutes they tell the legislators how great they all are; the next 20 minutes they tell you how great their group is; the final 20 minutes they tell you all about the legislation that they support or oppose.

There is some information there, but much of it is biased. I also think of the grassroots citizens, who frequently would have the opposite view, who do not have the organization or wherewithal to buy legislators meals to be able to talk to them.

Of course my constituents are welcome to contact me anytime (, 603 763-4359 or ). In fact, what do the readers think? Should I go to these events? Give me your opinion. I have been asking the groups to please just send me any information they wish to share. I can read it a lot faster than sitting through their events and it gives me more time to read your emails.

I think I'll stop here. Time for dinner and it's my turn to cook.
