What is Sunacom?
Sunacom is like an online local newspaper. Local columnists send their articles, images and links to me and I reformat them for the Web and upload them to our site. Throughout the day I search news sources for articles relevant to our Lake Sunapee region, and post summaries, quotes and links to them. As Editor, I maintain the "vision" of unbiased factual reporting. However, columnists are free to write their "opinions" that are distinct from "news."
All around us are tracts of land that could be packed with apartment buildings, shopping centers and acres of concrete. They're not, because most people who live here in the Lake Sunapee region care so much about our quality of life that they quietly sacrifice financial gain by putting their properties into conservation, or donate outright to the many organizations formed for that purpose.
Our fire services are like any full-time "professional" fire department, but for most towns in our region they are staffed by volunteers. While we're snoozing comfortably in our warm beds, many of those volunteers are often choking on acrid smoke while soaking in near-freezing water, while keeping a structure from burning to the ground in the middle of the night. They have "real" jobs too, with the same daily responsibilities as the rest of us who got a good night's sleep.
People in our towns donate much of their time and money to committees for our libraries, recreation, planning, zoning, beautification, emergency management, and on and on.
My community service is Sunacom. My personal goal is to improve transparency and citizen involvement in all levels of government, and to foster my belief that free and open discussion of everything, from all perspectives, is the lifeblood of a free society. Other than that, I have no axe to grind, and no political, religious or financial agenda behind Sunacom.
I do not receive compensation from anyone for Sunacom. The wonderful, community-spirited Sunacom columnists submit their work without compensation from me, but I encourage them to accept advertising sponsors.
Thanks for reading. If you feel that Sunacom might be worth mentioning to someone you know, please do.
